The Spark of a Global Discussion
Just a few days a go, a user named u/Lovely_Rabbit_2615 on Reddit's /r/RandomThoughts asked a seemingly simple yet profound question: "What’s the safest country in the world for women?" This inquiry ignited a thread bustling with diverse opinions, anecdotes, and debates, weaving together a tapestry of global perspectives.
The Unexpected Turn
As the thread gained traction, voices from around the globe chimed in. Narratives ranged from the serene fjords of Norway to the vibrant streets of Singapore, each painting a unique picture of safety and society. However, the conversation met an abrupt end when moderators, overwhelmed by the response, had to shut down the thread.
A Data-Driven Deep Dive
Refusing to let these shared insights fade into obscurity, I embarked on a mission to preserve and analyse this wealth of information. With a script and API access, I salvaged the comments, preventing them from vanishing into the internet's ether.

- Sweden: 133 positive mentions
- Iceland: 78 positive mentions
- Germany: 50 positive mentions
- Singapore: 31 positive mentions
- Norway: 47 positive mentions
- Australia: 29 positive mentions
- Croatia: 31 positive mentions
- Finland: 37 positive mentions

Visualising the Conversation
Transforming this raw data into visual narratives, I crafted compelling graphics that each told a story:
Key Insights from the Thread
The analysis unearthed several fascinating insights:
- European Dominance: A significant tilt towards European countries, especially the Nordic ones, indicating a perception of these nations as safe havens for women.
- Global Exceptions: Singapore, Canada and Australia emerged as non-European countries in the top 10, highlighting their perceived global safety status.
- The Nordic Highlight: The representation of Nordic countries (Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Finland, and Denmark) underscores their reputation for high living standards and strong social welfare systems.
A Story Beyond Numbers
This journey through data and global discussion serves as a powerful reminder of the community-driven conversations' impact. While the perceptions shared may not perfectly align with objective safety metrics, they offer a glimpse into the collective consciousness of a global community.
A Conversation Continued
Though the original thread was closed, the conversation it sparked continues. As we navigate the complex narratives of safety, society, and gender, such discussions provide valuable insights into our global perceptions and priorities.
